A LOCKDOWN of Huddersfield pubs is planned for Saturday.
A LOCKDOWN of Huddersfield pubs is planned for Saturday.
It’s part of a huge policing operation for the crucial Town v Millwall League I play-off game.
The town centre lockdown will see not only hundreds of officers on duty, but a team of police “spotters” from London who will flag up trouble-makers to West Yorkshire officers.
And many pubs will not be opening before or after the big game, which kicks off at 12.15pm.
The plans are in place to hopefully prevent a repetition of ugly scenes before the last Millwall visit, when scores of police officers had to wade in to break up a mass brawl which broke out on Wakefield Road outside The Waterloo pub on Friday, April 16.
Police have asked for extra doorstaff to be on duty for the small number of premises which will be open before the match.
They have also sought an agreement from licensees not to admit new drinkers until the visiting fans have set off home.
A major police escort will meet the expected 2,000 Millwall fans at a predetermined rendezvous point on the motorway before accompanying some fans to the designated “Millwall pub” for the day, The Market Tavern on Leeds Road.
Police expect the majority of Millwall fans will want to go straight to the Galpharm and they will be driven straight there. A large police presence will be retained at the pub before again accompanying them to the game.
Sgt John McFadzean, of the town centre policing team, said: “We are well prepared and hopefully everything will go without a hitch.
“It might be advantageous that it’s an early kick off.
“The Millwall fans will have had to leave at about 5.30am in the morning and hopefully that will influence things. It will also stop a lot of fans from being able to drink before the game.
“At present, the pubs that plan to open will be The Cherry Tree on John William Street, the Lord Wilson and Yates’s on King Street.
“These are the ones we know of and I don’t think there will be many others. It has been agreed there will be door staff on duty.
“After the game the pubs in town will not admit new drinkers between 2pm and 3.30pm. The speed with which they open fully depends on the dispersal of the fans so we can’t be more specific than that.
“Regarding the Millwall fans they can visit the Market Tavern on Leeds Road before the match but nowhere after that because they will be making their way back to London.
“The coaches are being met at a pre-arranged motorway service station and escorted into Huddersfield by police.”
The location of the meeting point is not being disclosed for operational reasons.
“There will be a police presence at the Market Tavern and police spotters from Millwall.”
The police added that they would not yet divulge who would remain in their seats after the end of the play off.
Sgt Fadzean said: “There will be a decision made by the commander on the day, probably 15 minutes before the end, it won’t be something that is set in stone.
“The policing operation is probably on the scale of the visit from Leeds for the lunchtime kick off a few weeks ago.”

No surprise. Used to live near there and out working I saw the idiots and their behaviour. Shame they can spoil it for the majority.

Certainly not the best of choices that's for sure. Dibble could have a problem with this game desite their preparations.

interesting to see how many Wall travel by train, could be interesting in Leeds or York if thats where they change for the trans pens to Hudds.
Re: A LOCKDOWN of Huddersfield pubs is planned for Saturday.
When they came to Leeds they had to buy a "match ticket and travel combo" and pick up their match tickets at a service station, might of done same for this un

Re: A LOCKDOWN of Huddersfield pubs is planned for Saturday.
I know some older Millwall fans who are travelling up by car and mini bus this morning then heading off to Boro tonight for a charity game on Sunday.
Met them a few years back when we started playing Millwall fans to raise funds for a charity set up by Colin Cooper when his little lad died. Nutters but good bunch of lads.

Well have to say they picked the worst pub for the Millwall fans to stay in but as far as I know it was peaceful before the game. We were at the ground by half 11 as I had to pick up my ticket and there were loads of police about but the atmosphere was fine. However during the game there were a few moments when it looked like trouble was brewing. I haven't heard of anything happening after the game but then again I've not really looked into it either. The sort of arrangements that were made for the Millwall fans have been put in place for when we visit them. Will be interesting to see how that one plays out. If there is going to be trouble I think it will be then as with a 0-0 result no-one really had any reason to be annoyed especially when we both had a goal disallowed. Only time will tell though.

No unfortunately not. I have an exam at 9:15 on wednesday morning so can't go. Think that is a blessing in disguise though.

No not sure that it's going to be the best idea. One team and their fans won't be happy which is probably gonna end in trouble. Best of watching it on sky at my boyfriends dads lol. Safer there.

If they can get an early foothold , I agree. Really looking forward to this one these are 2 very good attacking teams. Being a Yorkie there's only one team for me.......Millwall (only joking Terrier, Shawcross et al )
