Top flight applicants
SHEFFIELD United have been inundated with applications, including several from figures working at Premier League level, for the vacant managerial post at Bramall Lane, The Star can reveal.
More than 50 potential candidates are understood to have made contact with United’s hierarchy since Micky Adams’ departure was announced on Tuesday.
Several top-flight and Championship coaches are known to have expressed an interest in succeeding the 49-year-old.
“There has been an excellent response,” a source confirmed last night. “It’s proof that, despite going down, this is still viewed as a prestigious job within the business.”
Adams, described as a “decent” and “honourable” individual by plc chairman Kevin McCabe, was axed after failing to save his boyhood club from relegation last season.
Having amassed only 42 points from 46 outings, United will start next term in English football’s third tier for the first time in over two decades.
Adams has already made a lightning quick return to the game with Port Vale after opening talks with his former employers earlier this week.
Although the exact terms of his severance package have yet to be legally signed off, industry insiders suggest he will be entitled to payment worth around six months of the two-and-a-half-year contract he agreed after leaving Vale Park in December.
Danny Wilson, previously of Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley, Oxford’s Chris Wilder, Leyton Orient’s Russell Slade and Roberto Di Matteo would all be tempted by the prospect of becoming the fifth person to take charge of United since August.
McCabe, who has also announced that chief executive Trevor Birch will follow Adams through the exit door after helping to reshape their off-the-field operations and transfer strategy, has made no attempt to disguise the fact that experience of the lower leagues is a pre-requisite for those looking to lead United’s recovery.
Tuesday’s home leg of United’s FA Youth Cup Final against their namesakes from Manchester is fast approaching sell-out, officials confirmed last night.

Apparently Di Matteo was supposed to be interested, but he has a clause in his contract that says he isn't allowed to apply until his current contract has run down. I hope they get Irvine though
