We was brung up proper
WE WAS BRUNG UP PROPER !!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALLTHOSE BORN BEFORE THE early 70's !
First, we survived being born to mothers who drank while they
carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin,
ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed
meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or
cervical cancer..
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright
coloured lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and
when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention,
the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle...
Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops,
McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.
Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the
weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO
ONE actually died from this.
We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner
store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers & Bubble Gum We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and
drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight
because......
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we
were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then
ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built
tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games
at all, no 999 channels on SKY , no video/dvd films,
no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet
chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found
them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were
no Lawsuits from these accidents.
Only girls had pierced ears!
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live
in us forever.
You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...
We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door
or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!
RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those
who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
Getting into the team was based on MERIT
Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully's
always ruled the playground at school.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard
of. They actually sided with the law!
Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora'
and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL !
And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!

anymore

Agreed superb post , yours or plagiarised ? Whatever you were resourceful enough to either write it yourself or track it down.
Sadly most of it's true and there is very little exaggeration in the content. Children really do miss out these days.

Didn't have water pistols either - any empty washing up liquid bottle was good enough.

Used to play with tin cans and spent matches.
2 cans made a pair of stilts.

I love this. If that happened now there would be uproar but it might teach some kids to be more grateful for what they have!!!

Bloody hell, that even makes me feel old. I knew I was twice your age, but seeing the year 1997 really hammered it home!
Even I feel like we had things better than kids today in the 80s and 90s when I was growing up...I can only imagine how good the days being described in this thread really were...

You check with my mum I spent years doing her head in whilst I was making mud pies and climbed trees. I was forever coming in with scratched and razes but it never did me any harm. To a certain point I feel sorry for the modern kid, they have no idea how to entertain themselves unless it involves a games console.

Re: We was brung up proper
We had footballs and cricket balls and bats, a few board games, and I had the luxury of a table size snooker table. That was enough to keep me and my mates going all year. I had a bit of garden for myself, and i used to be a regular visitor to the Library. No TV during the day, no radio one, just the light programme with music while you work until I was 11. Perfectly happy. You don't need a lot of things, just enough to be able to enjoy yourself and have the time to play when you are a kid.
The main difference now is the freedom I had as a kid, we played in the street, or went off half a mile away to play on the big greens next to the A18 in Scunny, fotball mostly, even at night (big street lights on the A18) and so long as they knew I could go. We could play in the street too because there were only two cars on my side of the crescent I lived in, the road was empty, so football up and down the road was possible. Too much wrapping kids in cotton wool and not allowing them to go anywhere because of the irrational fear of parents brought about by the media nowadays.

We used to have street footie teams with transfers to the next street if they were short.
Used to go over the old racecourse catching mice and bird nesting, making dens in the woods and the local park.
Getting home from school and playing kickie tin or hide and seek out in the street with no cars about.

Marbles or allies as we knew it was a great game. Could play it anywhere, we used to have weekly championships and often played along the gutters.
Especially good if you got hold of any ball bearings or "Bonkers" as we called them
