Carlisle United fans who risk going to see their team play at Wembley with counterfeit goods could be forced to hand them over, club officials have warned.
They spoke out after reports that some street traders have been selling shirts and other branded Carlisle United items illegally in the city centre.
The club has now issued a stern warning to fans.
It says that any supporter carrying or wearing unofficial Wembley merchandise or counterfeit goods with the trademark of the competition’s sponsor – Johnstone’s Paints – will be barred from the stadium on the day of the final on Sunday, March 28.
The counterfeit goods are also likely to be confiscated, say United officials.
The club’s media officer Andy Hall said: “We are aware that unofficial traders are selling items for the final around town and we have asked the police, trading standards and the City Council to deal with the situation. It simply isn’t fair on the fans because they are making purchases that will be of no use to them.
“We have had to go through an approval process for every official item we have produced and it is only these items that will be allowed into the stadium.”
Mr Hall said that Carlisle United as a club had been fairly relaxed about what fans may wear on the day but he stressed that Wembley and Johnstone’s Paint, who sponsor the competition, were determined to protect their trade mark.
“They’re very protective of it,” he said, adding that only Wembley approved items would be allowed.
He added that Carlisle fans who produce their own T-shirts – for example bearing images of their favourite players – need not worry.
The warning relates only to counterfeit goods.
Carlisle United itself has five registered trade marks, which are: Carlisle United, Carlisle United FC, C.U.F.C., CUFC, and the flying fox.
Trading standards chiefs in Cumbria have said they will crack down on any trader who tries to sell counterfeit Carlisle United goods in the run up the Wembley final.
Any fan interested in buying official Wembley merchandise – things such as hats, shirts, and horns – can do so through the club shop, whose stock can be viewed on line at
