South Yorkshire men jailed for 'appalling' train attack
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/south_yorkshire/8597749.stm
Twelve Sheffield Wednesday supporters from South Yorkshire have been jailed for an "appalling" attack on a train.
Five men were repeatedly punched, kicked and stamped on by the group as the train travelled between York and Garforth in July 2009.
The offenders, aged 18 to 37, received jail terms ranging from 18 months to four years at Leeds Crown Court after admitting violent disorder.
They were caught after an operation by British Transport Police (BTP).
Passengers 'terrified'
Police said the five victims, who were Leeds United supporters, had been returning from a day at York Races on the 1550 BST Middlesbrough to Manchester Airport service on 11 July.
They tried to get away from the men by moving down the train, but were followed by the group.
BTP said passengers, including young children, and rail staff were "terrified" by the violence, which spread across three carriages and lasted for more than 15 minutes.
No-one should have to endure such an experience
Det Supt Granville Sellers, BTP
The attackers, who had been on a day out in York, fled when the train stopped at Garforth station in West Yorkshire.
They were caught by police who managed to identify them using CCTV from the train.
Dominic Mullan, 22, from Halifax Road, Sheffield and Shaun Jones, 37, from Dodworth Road, Barnsley, were each jailed for four years.
Sam Atkinson, 21, from Cotswold Road, Sheffield, received a three-year prison sentence, while Lee Ardron, 23, from the city's Broad Inge Crescent, Gavin Hodgson, 22, from School Road and Gavin Garton, 19, from Lansett Grove, were each jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Stephen Hogan, 23, from Warren Gardens, and Daniel Hewitt, 20, both from Harris Road, Sheffield, were each jailed for two years for their role in the attack.
Jack Culyer, 20, from the city's Ironside Crescent, Jordan Wasden, 18, from Wood Lane, Robert Wharam, from Chiltern Road and Thomas Wilkinson, 20, from Stanley Road, each received 18-month sentences.
Speaking after the case, Det Sgt Granville Sellers said: "This was an appalling, unprovoked attack on a group of young men who were simply returning from an enjoyable day at the races.
"No-one should have to endure such an experience."

thats one good thing about trans pen trains, cameras all over the place.
4 Boro fans were locked up last year for setting on 2 west ham lads after a game. Waited till they got the doors open at their station and belted them , got off and walked away.CCTV caught them(3 were in 40`s)

Despicable stuff, I agree. And as for the 'fans' with their "free the 12' flag at QPR on Saturday...you despair.
