Man Banned
From keeping animals.
A MAN from Sheffield who allowed a dog to starve almost to death has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years.
Niki Hague, aged 27, of Fox Hill Crescent, Birley Carr, was meant to be looking after mastiff Oliver for his owner - but instead neglected to feed him, a court heard.
The shocked RSPCA inspector who was called to the scene found Oliver collapsed and emaciated on a sofa, "starving to within an inch of his life".
Oliver's owner was staying at friends' houses at the time, and had paid Hague to look after his pet until he could take him back.
Inspector Damian Woolliscroft rescued the dog after the RSPCA were called by Hague's landlord.
Mr Woolliscroft said: "Oliver was in a truly dreadful state when I first saw him.
"Every bone in his body was protruding and his eyes were bulging. He was starving to within an inch of his life."
Oliver was first taken to a vet before being moved to Sheffield Animal Centre, in Attercliffe, for treatment. He made a full recovery, and has now been reunited with his owner.
Hague pleaded guilty at Sheffield Magistrates' Court to causing unnecessary suffering to Oliver by failing to provide an adequate diet.
He was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 100 hours' unpaid work, and was banned from keeping any animals for a decade, with no appeal for five years. He was also ordered to pay £350 costs.
Damian said: "The fact Oliver has made a full recovery is absolutely unbelievable given the state he was in, which is testament to the care he received.
"There can be no excusing what Mr Hague did. I hope the sentence passed will go some way to ensuring no other animals suffer at his hands."
