BILLY SHARP AGAIN AGAIN
AND AGAIN.
Billy Sharp Saga not over yet.
BILLY Sharp dropped a bombshell this week when he announced he had turned down a lucrative offer to join Burnley and was staying at Sheffield United to fight for his place in the team.
But at the same time the Sunderland Echo ran a story saying that defender Nyron Nosworthy was set to join the Blades in a £500,000 deal - just as soon as Sharp moved from Bramall Lane!
With Sharp also reported as cryptically declaring he wanted to "stay in South Yorkshire" it could mean that Doncaster's ambitious bid to sign him is not entirely dead in the water.
Rovers held a Board meeting yesterday when the issue was almost certain to be discussed but no-one from the club was immediately available for comment afterwards.
Reading between the lines it could depend on whether Blades boss Kevin Blackwell needs the sale of Sharp to help fund his own intended transfer targets.
According to the Echo Sheffield United might also struggle to afford Nosworthy's wages unless Sharp was off the books.
It all means that the situation is still far from clear and it could be a case of 'watch this space' next week.
Interestingly midfield ace John Oster finally put pen to paper on a new two year deal this week after agreeing terms at least a month ago.
There has been speculation that Oster had been waiting for a sign that Rovers were aiming high next season before sealing the deal.
Maybe he knows something the rest of us don't!
In any event Rovers will press ahead with other striker options if it does become clear that Sharp is unavailable - with Nottingham Forest forward Joe Garner at the top of the list.
And a deal will be done quickly to get the new man settled in with Rovers starting back in training next week.
Asked about the Sharp situation after returning from holiday this week manager Sean O'Driscoll produced a typically laconic reply.
He said: "Billy's been our number one target all summer, and you never say never, but obviously there are other players on the radar."
O'Driscoll smiled when asked about his own future after being installed as joint fourth favourite to succeed Roy Hodgson at Fulham.
Alan Curbishley tops the betting followed by Mark Hughes and Sven Goran Eriksson with O'Driscoll bracketed at 8-1 with former England boss
Glenn Hoddle.
O'Driscoll said: "I suppose I'd be miffed if I wasn't on the list being a former Fulham player but I've already got a job and I'm sure they'll be looking at bigger fish than me."
The Doncaster boss is expecting all his players - apart from Steve Brooker and Byron Webster - to be fit for selection for next
Wednesday's opening friendly match at Askern Villa (7pm).
He said: "Steve and Byron will still be training and are not that far away but we will give everybody a game who is fit."
New signing George Friend and striker James Hayter, who is about to sign a new extended contract, will both be in the squad.

Re: BILLY SHARP AGAIN AGAIN
Hmmmmm the Oster situation over his contract signing seems to fit in with the speculation that Billy is coming. I understand that they are good mates.
Guess as always we will have to wait and see......................

Re: BILLY SHARP AGAIN AGAIN
Sheffield United
LEEDS will continue to monitor Billy Sharp's situation at Sheffield United despite the striker's decision to remain at Bramall Lane next season.
United's Yorkshire rivals, who regained their Championship status earlier this year, have set their sights on Scunthorpe marksman Gary Hooper as manager Simon Grayson looks to increase the firepower at his disposal. But officials at Elland Road could be tempted to test the water at a later stage if Scunthorpe refuse to lower their £2.5 million asking price.
However, any move for Sharp would be fraught with difficulty given the fact that neither Leeds nor Doncaster Rovers, who had also hoped to prise him away from Kevin Blackwell's side, were prepared to match the £1m-plus fee Burnley had agreed to pay for the 24-year-old's services before he elected to stay put.
Sharp, who scored 15 goals in just 35 appearances during a loan spell at the Keepmoat Stadium last term, would be an attractive proposition for a number of clubs should he fail to force himself into United's starting 11.
As The Star revealed on Tuesday, he remains hopeful of convincing Blackwell that he is worthy of a place despite being used sparingly since the former Leeds and Luton chief's arrival.
Having rejected Turf Moor's advances, Sharp returned to training with his team mates at Shirecliffe yesterday as preparations for the 2010/11 Championship campaign began in earnest.
