Sheffield Wednesday have secured the signature of Preston North End striker Neil Mellor on a season-long loan deal. Mellor joins the Owls in time for their pre-season training camp trip to Austria, which kicks off on Saturday.

The 27-year-old will bolster Wednesday's attack and add significant experience along the way. A graduate from the Liverpool academy, Mellor scored crucial goals for the Merseyside giants against the likes of Olympiakos and Arsenal. He has also enjoyed loan spells in the Premiership and the Championship with Wigan and West Ham respectively.

The pacy forward joined Preston for £500,000 in the summer of 2006 and went on to score 34 goals from 69 starts for the Lilywhites. Mellor is Sheffield-born and the son of former Owls winger Ian. He is Alan Irvine's seventh new recruit of the summer.

The Wednesday manager said: "Neil is a player I know very well from my time at Preston and I am delighted to bring him to Sheffield Wednesday for the season.

"We've worked really hard to bring Neil and all the other new players to the club and I'm very pleased with the business we have done.

"I'd be excited about the squad we have assembled for the Championship, never mind League One."

Very pleased with this aswell also would have been a good signing for a fair few of the championship sides let alone league 1 and in my opinion will bag 20+ this season , What you think guys?

"just a fat steven gerrard"

Ha

Anyway ronnie as i know being a rover loan signings and free transfers are often a good way forward, whats the point in blowing £££ on big name flops when you can get a bit of a closer insight to how good they are for next to nothing.
Its common sense wednesday dont have much cash nor do the rovers infact none of the yorkshire clubs are loaded really so loan signings and freebies are the way to go.

Just dont let ronnie or any of the dingles get on your nerves besides they have more fingers to type with so will your fingers will most certainly get tired quicker than theres.

We must of had over 10 loanees in last season, Gradel being one of them got him on a full contract from Leicster for pennies and is one of our top players. Gutted the silly muppet got himsen a 4 game ban though Rolling Eyes
