Seven Killed In Shooting At US Army Base
At least 12 people have been killed and 31 others wounded in two shootings at a military base in Texas, the US army has said.
One attacker was in custody but police said at least one other was on the loose following the rampage at the Fort Hood complex in Killeen.
The suspects were in military uniform and the gunman still at large is believed to have a high-powered sniper rifle, MSNBC said.
The cable news channel went on to say he was holed up in a building surrounded by SWAT teams and there could also be a third gunman.
The base, which is home to about 65,000 soldiers, is currently in lockdown mode, according to Fort Hood's website.
A Killeen police department spokeswoman warned that suspects were still at large.
"There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and all the suspects are not in custody at this time," she said.
"I know they have active shooters out there."
Fort Hood spokesman Sergeant Major Jamie Poston told CNN: "At this point we're looking for the other shooter."
He added: "Emergency services responded. We have evacuated a number of wounded."
Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks said the first shooting began at about 1:30pm at a Soldier Readiness Centre, which handles administrative details for troops.
Banks said the second incident took place at a theatre on the sprawling base.
The shooting at the Soldier Readiness Centre happened before a graduation ceremony, said local congressman John Carter.
He went on: "I had a man on the scene, who is my regional director and former chaplin at Fort Hood, waiting to go to a graduation ceremony.
"A soldier came running up to him saying, 'sir, don't go over there. Somebody is shooting over there'.
"When the soldier ran by him, he saw the soldier didn't know it, but he was wounded.
"So, he went into the building and they stopped him, because he had been shot. He heard small arms and some rifle fire while he was there."
Fort Hood is the largest US military base in the world and has been rehabilitating many soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Mr Carter added.
Army personnel told Fox News they were not sure if the victims were civilians or military personnel.
US President Barack Obama has been briefed on the shootings, and the White House is monitoring the situation, a spokesman said.
