Now that is interesting, I never knew that Middlesbrough was such a late developer. Love that area though Staithes , Whitby etc. He left a fantastic place and in doing so must have had a fantastic life as an explorer. Often overlooked as one of the greatest Englishmen of all time. Yes, many people seem to forget that Middlesbrough though it is an industrial town has some beautiful countryside and seaside very close to it.
All along the coast there are some fine little villages.Saltburn is worth a look. Then carry on to staithes, Robin Hoods bay and Whitby.
As recently as 1851 the poulation Of middlesbrough was only 7,600

Particularly love Whitby, it has everything for me and know Saltburn well. The place I really like is Alnwick Bay (spelling?). The North Yorshire Moors are a beautiful place especially the Danby Foresrt area.Transporter wrote:Yes, many people seem to forget that Middlesbrough though it is an industrial town has some beautiful countryside and seaside very close to it.

I never realised that Boro' was that small then , there were more people in the Ale Houses of Doncaster on any one night then than the whole population of Boro'.

Re: Question for you all on this Yorkshire board.
Yes it's a relatively new town. I suppose a bit like Milton Keynes is now. It was built for a purpose i.e to make steel. Now they are closing the industries down.
Do you mean Alnwick which is in Northumberland or Runswick Bay near saltburn?

One day he will get the true 'worldwide' recognition that he deserves. Is there a plaque outside of his mam's house ?

His mams house is not recorded although there are still houses that date to 1600`s standing near to the church. Local MP lives in one of them.
