Paul Green want return to Donny

FORMER Doncaster Rovers favourite Paul Green is desperate for his old club to avoid Championship relegation.


Green impressed for his new club Derby County against his former clun on Saturday as the Rams clinched as 2-1 victory at the Keepmoat Stadium.

But with 10 games left in the league campaign and Rovers just four points from clawing away out of the bottom three, midfielder Green is backing the Keepmoat outfit to get out of trouble.

“Obviously I don’t like to see where Doncaster are,” revealed Green, a former Rovers’ trainee who made 277 appearances for the club.

“I had some fantastic years at the club and the fans were brilliant with me over the years.

“It’s a sad time to see them down there at the bottom of the Championship.

“But they’ve still got 10 games to go and it’s tight down there, so hopefully they can get out of it.

“You just have to look at the players they’ve brought in and are still bringing in, some of them are Premier League quality.

“[El-Hadji] Diouf is one of those players and he showed [against us] that if he gets a chance he’ll put it away. Doncaster is still a great club, but unfortunately it’s just not going right for them at the moment.

Green, who played for Rovers between 2001-2008, added: “Hopefully in the next couple of games things do go right for them and they can climb up the table.

“I’ve seen Rovers play some tidy football this season and score some great goals, so they’ve got the quality in the team to get out of it.”

And the Republic or Ireland international, who celebrates his 29th birthday next month, hasn’t ruled out a return to Rovers in the near future, potentially towards the back end of his career if an opportunity were to arise.

“If the opportunity ever game around at the end of the career, then maybe I’d look at coming back to the club,” said Green.

Meanwhile, Rovers boss Dean Saunders has stressed tonight’s home clash with Millwall is a “six-pointer”.

“It [losing to Derby] makes it a six-pointer. It makes it more important than before,” stressed Saunders.

“We’re still going to have to win five or six games to get out of trouble, no matter what happens to anybody else.”
